1. WHERE THE BIBLE CAME FROM
The Bible is a revelation of God to humanity, consisting of sixty-six books bound together as one unified book.
22 books are mainly historical
21 books are prophetic
21 books are epistolary (letters)
2 books are primarily poetic
Although written by at least thirty-six different authors—including kings, farmers, lawyers, generals, fishermen, priests, a tax collector, a doctor, rich and poor men—over a period of about 1,600 years, the Bible remains one unified book because God is its true author.
1.1 The Divine Source of Prophecy
1. Who gave the prophecies of the Bible?
“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” — 2 Peter 1:21
All prophecy was inspired by the Holy Spirit (also called the Spirit of Christ).
2. How much of Scripture is inspired?
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God.” — 2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is fully inspired by God.
3. Who reveals the future?
“Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” — Amos 3:7
God alone reveals future events.
1.2 Testimony of the Prophets
The prophets themselves confirmed their messages were from God:
David: “The Spirit of the LORD spake by me…” — 2 Samuel 23:2
Jeremiah: “I have put my words in thy mouth.” — Jeremiah 1:9
Ezekiel: “Thou shalt speak my words.” — Ezekiel 2:7
Zechariah (Luke 1:67–70): spoke by the Holy Spirit
1.3 Revelation Process (Example: Revelation)
“Revelation of Jesus Christ… he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John.” — Revelation 1:1–2
Order of communication:
God (source of truth)
Jesus Christ
Angel
Prophet (John)
The people
Conclusion (Section 1)
God spoke through prophets “at sundry times and in divers manners” (Hebrews 1:1).
The Bible is God’s Word and will endure forever (Isaiah 40:8). It should be valued more than daily food (Job 23:12).
